If you have to ask what Jazz is … You’ll never know

Louis Armstrong

Jazzman

[We strongly recommend you listen to this music while reading to get the mood]

By the way, what is jazz ?

Many people would simply answer this is smashing a piano or spitting into a trumpet, hoping that an informed public understands and recognizes the subversive genius of that work…
However, the reality is a bit more complex!

Beginning of the history class

Grandpa Jazz was born at the end of the 19th century in South America and it has had enough time until now to evolve and to give birth to many children. SO MANY CHILDREN! Swing, Bebop, Gypsy, Bossa-Nova, Free Jazz, Soul and Funky are just the beginning of the list!
What’s cool with Jazz is that it’s a bit catch-all – whatever people’s basic predilection, there is always a way to make something fun and give it a new musical current name 😉

“But, why should I come to the jazz club?”

Good question! Firstly because it’s freaking awesome to say “I’m a Jazzman/Jazzwoman” !

In the Jazz Club, we don’t claim to rival Miles Davis, Herbie Hancock or Duke Ellington! The aim is to discover different aspects of Grandpa Jazz and to improvise on several Jazz standards, always supervised by our wise teacher David Haudrechy – from the group Initiative H.

From “Footprints” to “Fly me to the moon” or even “Black Orpheus”, we revisit classics – we try to get to know them, play them, experiment and then we perform live in order to share it with the ENAC students.

You like music? You want to play your instrument again? Are you ready to enter this wonderful Jazz World, where everything (almost) makes sense? You really want to improve your improvisation skills? You want your neighbours and friends to curse you when you are working your instrument at home?
Stop hesitating – the Jazz Club is for you. You might be a bassist, a guitarist, a pianist or even a singer, you’ll find your place in the Jazz Club!
You may feel a bit lost with the tons of 7th, the 9th, the 13th, the 6th harmonics but don’t worry,  you’ll become used to them!
Participation to this club will certainly require a small personal investment.

Hope to see you for a jam,
Have a good day
